WARPATH: NEON FRONTIER — Art & Audio Direction

The one-line brief: old DOS game meets modern indie — retro-military stencil bones, neon phosphor blood, clean sci-fi skin. If Warpath 97 was a Win95 form over a starfield, this is the same starfield seen through a mil-spec heads-up display built in 2027.

Three ingredients, in tension on purpose: 1. Retro military — stencil type, olive/gunmetal panels, rivets implied not drawn, klaxon reds, "property of the fleet" labeling. 2. Modern neon — additive-blended phosphor glows, bloom on emissives only, trails, chromatic kiss on explosions. 3. Clean sci-fi UI — thin-line vector panels, generous spacing, one accent per state, zero skeuomorphic clutter.

Rule of balance: environment is retro, energy is neon, information is clean. When in doubt, the thing you read is clean, the thing that hurts glows, the thing you own is painted military.

1. Color palette

Core (space & surfaces)

Token Hex Use
void-0 #05070D Deep space background
void-1 #0B1020 Nebula base, panel backdrop
hull-gunmetal #3A4148 Ship hull midtone, panel chrome
hull-olive #4C523B Military hull accents, crates, docks
bone #D8D5C8 Primary UI text — warm off-white, "stenciled paint"
bone-dim #8B8A7F Secondary text, disabled

Neon (energy & factions) — additive, bloom-permitted

Token Hex Use
path-cyan #38E1FF The player's path. Shields, own trails, owned-planet rings, friendly UI
amber-alert #FFB43C Currency, salvage, mining beams, warnings
combine-red #FF4A3C Combine empire, damage numbers, threat UI
scourge-green #66FF66 Scourge empire, gas clouds, poison ticks ("hate green" — the cheat-code joke, honored)
veil-violet #B36CFF Veil empire, cloak shimmer, wormgates
nova-white #F4FFFF Explosion cores, muzzle flash frame-1, crit flashes

Accessibility: faction identity is never color-alone — each empire also owns a shape language (Combine = blocky chevrons, Scourge = jagged tris, Veil = thin crescents) and an icon. Colorblind presets remap the four faction hues (deuteranopia/protanopia/tritanopia tables), UI contrast ≥ 4.5:1 for all text on void-1.

2. Lighting

  • No dynamic light engine — painted light: sprites carry baked rim-light from the sector's star direction (4 pre-rendered angles), cheap and consistent.
  • Emissives (engines, shields, neon signage on stations) rendered to a glow layer → single gaussian bloom pass. Bloom threshold high: only true emissives bloom, text never does.
  • Sector mood tinting: a single ambient multiply color per biome (mining belt = warm amber dust; nebula = violet murk; fortress = cold red wash).
  • Vignette 8% + very subtle film grain on space only (never on UI), selling "CRT memory" without a scanline cliché. (Optional CRT mode toggle for the nostalgic: scanlines + barrel distortion.)

3. Particles & VFX

Budgeted, pooled, tiered (High/Med/Low device tiers):

  • Engine trails: ribbon quads, path-color, 0.6 s fade; boost doubles width + adds spark shed.
  • Mining beam: amber beam with ore-chip particles arcing to cargo; hit-point glow grows as the pocket depletes — progress is the VFX.
  • Shield hits: hex-ripple decal at impact point on the shield ring, path-cyan for you, faction color for enemies.
  • Gas: soft-alpha billows, scourge-green, interior darkening so depth reads; entering it desaturates screen edges.
  • Warp: starfield lines stretch → 200 ms white-cyan tunnel → snap; UI stays put (motion-sickness safe).
  • Cloak: dissolve to heat-shimmer outline (never fully invisible to its owner).

Explosions (the money shot)

Three sizes, one grammar: flash → shockwave ring → debris → afterglow. - Small (drones): 1-frame nova-white flash, 12 debris sparks, 0.3 s. - Medium (ships): flash + expanding thin ring + 20–30 hull-colored debris chunks with mini-trails + brief chromatic aberration pulse (2 px) + smoke puffs that clear fast. - Large (flagship parts, planets' turrets, buster bomb): screen-edge white flash 60 ms, double shockwave, slow-mo 120 ms (0.5×), camera shake (settings-scalable to zero), debris rain, lingering ember field. Buster bomb additionally paints a fading scorch decal. - Screen shake, flashes, and slow-mo all have accessibility sliders; "photosensitive mode" caps flash luminance delta.

4. UI style

  • Panels: void-1 at 92% opacity, 1 px path-cyan @ 35% border, corner-cut top-left (the "mil-spec chamfer" — the signature shape, everywhere: buttons, cards, minimap frame).
  • Buttons: stencil label on chamfered plate; hover = border to 100% + 2 px glow underline; press = plate dips 1 px + click sound; disabled = bone-dim, no glow. Primary CTA is the only filled-cyan button per screen.
  • Health/status bars: hull = segmented blocks (military, chunky, bone on gunmetal); shield = continuous thin neon arc above it (energy is smooth, matter is chunky — the whole art direction in one bar). Enemy bars: faction-colored, only while damaged or targeted.
  • Damage feedback: numbers off by default (readability first), toggleable; hits communicate via shield ripple + bar chips.
  • Minimap (bottom-right, chamfered): sector-local radar sweep aesthetic — faint rotating sweep line, blips as faction-shaped icons, planets as rings filled by allegiance %, view-cone wedge for the camera. Tapping/clicking opens the full galaxy map: sector graph as a constellation of chamfered nodes, warp lanes as dotted lines, fog-of-war sectors as dark static, allegiance shown as per-node pie rings. The map is diegetic — labeled like a fleet chart: SECTOR 07 // "KESTREL DEEP".
  • The Radio: bottom-left collapsible ticker, monospace, callsign-colored prefixes, subtle squelch animation on new lines. It's the personality organ of the UI.
  • Menus: full-bleed starfield with a slow parallax drift; content in a single left-aligned column of chamfered panels; oversized stencil page titles with a thin cyan rule. Settings use clean toggles/sliders, grouped, searchable.

5. Icons

Single-weight 2 px stroke vector set, 24/32/48 px grid, bone-colored, state-tinted (cyan selected / amber cost / red locked-threat). Filled silhouettes only for faction marks and module categories (weapon = shell, system = hex, utility = wrench-chevron). Every store item = category silhouette + distinguishing line detail; tek tier shown as I–VI tally notches under the icon — readable at 24 px on a phone.

6. Typography

Role Face (or metric equivalent) Character
Display / titles Industry-style geometric stencil (e.g. "Refinery"/Industry, or open-source: Big Shoulders Stencil) RETRO-MILITARY, all-caps, tracked +8%
UI labels & body Inter / IBM Plex Sans Clean sci-fi, tabular numerals for all stats
Radio, coordinates, seeds IBM Plex Mono / JetBrains Mono The DOS ghost — anywhere the "machine" speaks

Sizes on a 1.25 modular scale; minimum 14 px equivalent on phone; numerals always tabular so credit counters don't jitter.

7. Audio direction

Music

  • Synthwave with a military spine: analog-style pads and arps over live-ish snare/tom patterns — "Carpenter Brut meets a drumline," restrained.
  • Adaptive 3-layer system per biome: Drift (exploration: pads + sparse arp) → Contact (enemy in sector: bass + drums enter) → Warpath (combat: full kit, lead line). Layers crossfade on game-state, 4-bar quantized.
  • Dock has its own diegetic track: lo-fi radio-filtered version of the score, as if piped through station speakers. Victory recap = major-key reprise of the main theme; defeat = same melody, half-time, detuned.
  • Main theme quotes a 4-note motif per empire so boss music can "speak" faction.

Ambience

  • Space is not silent: low tonal wind bed per biome (nebula = choir-ish shimmer, belt = rock-tick sparkle, fortress = sub drone), star hum rising near suns, muffled planet chatter when in dock range.

Weapons

  • Primaries: layered mechanical attack + energy body + tail — Flak = chunky thud; Pulse laser = FM zap with pitch-down; Rail = charge whine → crack + echo; Nova beam = continuous filtered roar. Player weapons pan center-forward; enemy fire pans by position.
  • Cooldown modules get distinct "ready" pips (short two-note motifs) so builds develop an audible rhythm.

Explosions

  • Sub-bass thump (40–60 Hz) + mid crunch + debris sizzle tail; large explosions duck music 300 ms (sidechain) — the mix breathes with the fight. Buster bomb: 1 s pre-detonation rising whine, then the biggest sound in the game.

UI

  • Phosphor clicks (short filtered square blips), invest action = warm cash-register-adjacent "kaching" without the cliché (two-note marimba+coin), tek-level-up = small fanfare, allegiance flip = faction motif sting + radio cheer.

Voice

  • No recorded VO dialogue. Radio mumble (Banjo-Kazooee-style syllabic synth voice per personality: pitch/formant per bot captain, squelch in/out) + one clean synthetic fleet-computer voice for critical callouts only ("Shields down." "Landslide imminent.") — cheap, characterful, localization-proof.
  • Every audio bus (music/SFX/radio/voice) independently mixable; full captions option for radio + callouts.
